Case Studies in Online Learning

Real Media Introduction by
Dr. Thomas Ingebritsen

Would you like to learn more about using online learning materials in your classroom? Hear two faculty members from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) present their experiences in developing and using these materials.

Presenters:

Viviana Cortes and Nur Aktas, Department of English, Enhancing EAP writing classes through corpus-assisted instruction

This presentation focuses on the corpus collection and curriculum development for a corpus-based course of disciplinary writing for graduate students who are speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL). The first part of the presentation will include a description of the corpora and software development, which constitute the core of the course design. The second part will present examples of some class activities, as well as samples of students’ responses, which will reflect the advantages of using corpora in a writing class with students from very diverse disciplines.

Craig Ogilvie, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Transforming online problem sets into a learning tool for introductory physics courses

The aim of this project was to improve the ease with which assignments used in Phys 221 and 222 can be customized and deployed by the instructors of these courses, and to increase the educational effectiveness of the weekly problem-sets taken by students.  This was accomplished by 1) organizing existing WebCT quiz questions into a database according to topic and difficulty, 2) providing question feedback, and 3) developing a skill profiling and assessment tool.
